Three-year study reveals worldwide port security lapses
Lapses by private port operators, shipping lines or truck drivers could allow terrorists to smuggle weapons of mass destruction into the United States, according to a government review of security at American seaports.
The $75 million, three-year study by the Department of Homeland Security included inspections at a New Jersey cargo terminal involved in the dispute over a Dubai company's now-abandoned bid to take over significant operations at six major U.S. ports.

Private security roundtable focuses on government contracting
The National Association of Security Companies (NASCO) held a Government Security Contractors Roundtable lunch in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 7 and a regional roundtable forum in New York City on Feb. 15.
The gatherings are part of an important NASCO goal for 2006: increasing awareness and understanding among policy-makers and users of contract security services regarding the importance of the private security industry to America's strength and freedom.

Bomb parts easily slip past airports' security
Despite the multibillion-dollar ramp-up in aviation security since Sept. 11, 2001, congressional investigators were able to sneak homemade bomb components past federal screeners at all 21 airports they targeted in a recent covert exercise.

TOPOFF exercise finds first responder communication gaps
Fire and rescue crews responded well to a simulated terrorist attack in eastern Connecticut last year but the drill revealed gaps in the way top officials share information and delegate authority, an independent review finds.

Procurement Watch

  • The Social Security Administration (SSA) has awarded a contract to Probaris Technologies Inc., Philadelphia, in support of the agency's HSPD-12 Implementation Project. The SSA has licensed Probaris' SP/PIV Web platform, and it has engaged Probaris' professional services team to support the implementation effort.

  • The Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, in partnership with the University of Mississippi, has awarded a contract to Global Security Systems, Diamondhead, Miss., to create and build a statewide emergency alert network. The system will allow text messages to be sent via FM radio signals (through Mississippi Public Broadcasting and other private FM broadcast transmission networks) to emergency responders in crisis situations.

  • The United States Army has contracted with TKC Integration Services, Alaska, to procure the Tumbleweed Validation Authority (VA) from Tumbleweed Communications Corp., Redwood City, Calif., in support of the Army's efforts to achieve enterprise-wide public key infrastructure (PKI) validation for smart card log-on and secure messaging.
