DHS has made
America only "marginally safer," new book says
The Department of Homeland Security has made the
nation only "marginally safer" than it was before the 2001 terror
attacks that spawned its creation, the agency's former internal watchdog
says in his memoir.
The book, released Monday by former Homeland Security inspector general
Clark Kent Ervin, also accuses Tom Ridge, the department's first
secretary, of shutting down critics instead of focusing on terrorists,
The Associated Press reports.

Background checks implemented
for port workers
The Department of Homeland Security will begin
conducting name-based background checks on nearly 400,000 port workers
within the United States. These checks will be an initial measure as DHS
expedites the rollout of a comprehensive nationwide biometric-based
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) in 2006.
"It is fundamental that individuals who pose a security threat do not
gain access to our nation's ports," says Homeland Security Secretary
Michael Chertoff.

U.S. may not be equipped to
deal with pandemic
If pandemic influenza hits in the next year or so, the
few weapons the United States has to keep it from spreading will do
little, a new computer model indicates.
A pandemic flu is likely to strike one in three people if nothing is
done, according to the results of computer simulation published in the
journal Nature.

Report: Federal security not
being helped enough by private sector
The nonpartisan Council on Foreign Relations has
released a report finding that the federal government has failed to
mobilize the private sector on Homeland security.
The report, written by "America is Vulnerable" author Stephen E. Flynn,
and the director of the Homeland Security Center at the Reform
Institute, Daniel B. Prieto, says that "the federal government is not
doing enough to harness the capabilities, assets and goodwill of the
private sector to bolster our nation's state of preparedness," The Hill
reports.
