Homeland Security grants have some cities up in arms
The cities of New York and Washington will get less money in this year's allocation of Homeland security grants, drawing harsh criticism from politicians in both areas, CNN reports.
The Department of Homeland Security has announced the recipients of $1.7 billion distributed through various programs to help states and cities prepare for potential terror attacks and natural disasters.

DHS says RFID for human identification offers little benefit
The Department of Homeland Security's Emerging Applications and Technology Subcommittee says that using RFID in human applications "appears to offer little benefit when compared to the consequences it brings for privacy and data integrity."
The Smart Card Alliance begs to differ. "We disagree with the report's conclusion to "disfavor" all RFID technologies for applications involving human identification," the industry group said in a published response to the subcommittee report. Click here for the rest of the article

U.S. tightens security on northern border
The United States has tightened security with Canada in its northeast corner to the dismay of businesses and residents accustomed to crossing the world's longest undefended border with little more than a wave of a hand or a flash of a driver's license.
Reuters reports that since last week, most travelers from Canada must show identification and submit to background checks at U.S. border posts in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, said Ted Woo, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman in Boston.
