September is National Preparedness Month
More than 1,150 national, regional, state and local organizations have joined the Department of Homeland Security in support of National Preparedness Month -- a nationwide effort to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies of all kinds in their homes, businesses, schools and communities.
This year, the department is putting a particular focus on family emergency preparedness, reminding individuals to make themselves and their loved ones better prepared.

Computer game to train first responders
A Maryland company has developed a computer game to train emergency responders who are forced to make split-second life-and-death decisions, the Washington Times reports.
"Incident Commander," developed by BreakAway Ltd., simulates crisis scenarios including a severe storm, a natural disaster, a school hostage situation and a terrorist attack.
The game was developed for the Department of Justice as part of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) mandated after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Procurement Watch

  • Global Security Systems, Jackson, Miss., has successfully tested its Mississippi statewide emergency alert network, designed and delivered under contract to the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security. During a test of the FEMA DEAS (Digital Emergency Alert System), the system demonstrated live interoperability by delivering EAS text messages via FM radio signals (through Mississippi Public Broadcasting and private FM networks) to the cell phones of test participants in Jackson.

  • The Zorinsky Federal Building in Omaha has selected a blast-resistant curtainwall system from Wausau Window and Wall Systems, Wausau, Wis. The company has engineered and fabricated 49,305 square feet of blast-mitigating curtainwall plus an additional 18,970 square feet of interior curtainwall as part of a $50 million renovation.

  • The Virginia Port Authority has chosen fixed readers infrastructure from GE Security, Bradenton, Fla., to be installed at the Norfolk International Terminals and Portsmouth Marine Terminal at the Port of Virginia. The system communicates with Container Security Devices (CSDs) mounted in ocean-going cargo containers as they pass through the terminal and alerts as to whether or not the container has been opened. The system also stores and communicates information about which ports the container has traveled through, and who and where the container was initially packed.

  • The U.S. State Department has deployed a video surveillance system from ioimage, Hackensack, N.J., at a compound in Kabul, Afghanistan to protect the facility from security breaches. The intelligent video system enables dozens of pan/tilt/zoom and fixed cameras to monitor activity outside the compound and to alert security guards to suspicious events and insurgent attacks.
