DHS proposes use of vicinity
RFID for security at ports of entry
On the heels of President Bush's signing of the
Security and Accountability for Every (SAFE) Port Act, authorizing $3.4
billion over five years for security measures, the Department of
Homeland Security is proposing the use of vicinity RFID technology for
further security at U.S. ports.
The vicinity RFID technology, to be compatible with the U.S. Department
of State's new PASSport card, would allow a travel document to be read
from several feet as a vehicle approaches inspection.

TSA may use 3-D X-ray
technology for carry-on bags
The Transportation Security Administration may screen
carry-on bags with new three-dimensional X-ray machines that are better
at spotting liquid explosives, guns and other weapons, USA Today
reports.
The 3-D machines have "an extraordinary ability to find" liquids, TSA
chief Kip Hawley told the newspaper. "They're a step beyond where we are
today."

NFL on stadium bomb threats
A threat of radiological bomb attacks at seven
professional football stadiums was posted this week on an Internet site,
but domestic security officials said this week that they had no reason
to place credibility in it.

Thousands wrongly on terror
watch list
Thousands of people have been mistakenly linked to
names on terror watch lists when they crossed the border, boarded
commercial airliners or were stopped for traffic violations, according
to a GAO report.
More than 30,000 airline passengers have asked the Transportation
Security Administration to have their names cleared from the lists, the
Government Accountability Office says in the report.

Firefighters
receive funding for safety technology
The Department of Homeland Security has awarded $91.8
million in direct assistance grants to 860 fire departments and first
responder organizations. Additional phases of the Assistance to
Firefighters Grant (AFG) program will total $485 million in awards to
nearly 5,000 fire-related organizations.

Tennessee
university to teach how to keep food supplies safe
The Department of Homeland Security has selected the
University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine as the lead
institution for training communities and farmers in how to protect the
nation's food supply from terrorists.
Funded with a $2 million grant, the program, through UT's Center for
Agriculture and Food Security and Preparedness, will reach across the
agricultural spectrum, from crops to dairies to meat processors, The
Associated Press reports.

- Raytheon Technical Services Co. LLC,
Arlington, Va., a subsidiary of Raytheon Co., Waltham, Mass., has
been awarded a $3.7 million contract by the Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) to develop an aviation security enterprise
management solution. The contract includes developing, integrating and
testing commercial off-the-shelf and custom software used to exchange
data with the Threat Image Projection (TIP) Ready X-ray (TRX)
systems.
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has ordered backscatter
X-ray screening systems from American Science and Engineering
Inc., Billerica, Mass. The order includes Radioactive Threat
Detection (RTD) capability, CBP-customized operator training, service,
and labor warranty.
- The United States National Guard has purchased AreaRAE wireless
Rapid Deployment Kits (RDKs) from RAE Systems Inc., San Jose,
Calif., to equip 55 Civil Support Teams (CSTs) with portable toxic gas
and radiation detection equipment.
The following companies have made procurement-related
announcements:
- ADT Security Services, Boca Raton, Fla., a unit of Tyco
Fire and Security, has been named a "Qualified HSPD-12 System
Integration Service Provider" by the General Services
Administration.
- LEGIC Identsystems Ltd., Chicago, has announced that its
contactless smart card technology supports the U.S. government standard
FIPS 201 for physical access control systems (PACS V2.2).
- SecuGen, Santa Clara, Calif., has announced its biometric
fingerprint algorithms have received Minutiae Interoperability Exchange
(MINEX) Certification from the National Institute of Standards and
Technology and are compliant with the FIPS 201 and HSPD-12.
- SI Intl. Inc., Reston, Va., has been named a qualified
HSPD-12 systems service provider by the GSA.
