Technology panel backs down on restricting RFID
A technology advisory panel to the Department of Homeland Security has toned down its objections to radio frequency identification in the latest version of its report on the subject, Post-Newsweek Media reports.
The report, "The Uses of RFID for Human Identification," was revised at a Dec. 6 meeting of the Emerging Applications and Technology Subcommittee, which is part of the Data Privacy and Integrity Committee that advises DHS. The revised version is now being reviewed by Secretary Michael Chertoff.
The new Version 3.4a states that if DHS selects RFID systems as the best available technologies to identify individuals, then privacy and information security must be built into the system in the design stage.

  • The Department of Homeland Security has awarded Raytheon Co., Washington, a contract to produce the Advanced Route Evaluation System (ARES), that will perform risk analysis on aviation routes to help planners determine the best routes for aircraft to use during an emergency.

  • The U.S. Department of State has awarded a contract to Dlubak Corp., Blairsville, Pa., to develop, test and deliver commercialized RF/IR Attenuating Window Glazing Systems.
