Investigators to target airport
security
Teams of federal agents could be prowling airport
perimeters next year as congressional investigators scrutinize federal
efforts to safeguard planes, tarmacs and runways.
The federal investigation will focus on perimeter security technology,
background checks, training and planning -- all topics in a 2004 report
critical of the Transportation Security Administration.

Federal security
regulations for chemical plants proposed
The Department of Homeland Security has proposed new
regulations that would require chemical companies like DuPont and Dow
Chemical Co. to tighten security at their U.S. plants.
The rules, which stem from concerns that an attack on chemical plants
could prompt a deadly spill or explosion, would require companies to put
in place a buffer zone outside the facilities, require personnel
background checks and allow the DHS to perform site visits.

US-VISIT faces land border
challenges
The US-VISIT program to collect, maintain, and share
data on selected foreign nationals entering and exiting the United
States at air, sea and land ports of entry has insufficient management
controls to identify problems and evaluate operations, according to a
Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.

DHS admits it did not follow
privacy laws
The Department of Homeland Security has admitted it
did not follow the Privacy Act two years ago in obtaining more
commercial data about U.S. airline passengers than it had announced it
would.

- Battelle Memorial Institute has signed
a $250 million deal with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to
manage a federally funded research and development center in Maryland.
Battelle will manage bioforensic research through its newly created arm,
the Battelle National Biodefense Institute.
- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has selected the Card
Manager solution from RSA Security, Bedford, Mass., to support
Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) compliance on
behalf of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The software will
help enable the SSA to issue personal identity verification (PIV) cards
to more than 100,000 agency employees and to manage the lifecycle of
electronic certificates stored on the cards.
- American Science and Engineering Inc., Billerica, Mass., has
been selected by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to
deliver cargo, parcel and personnel X-ray inspection systems. The
contract includes the OmniView Gantry cargo and vehicle inspection
system, the Z Portal multi-view cargo and vehicle screening system, the
Gemini parcel inspection system and the SmartCheck personnel screening
system.
- The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), which is
responsible for processing the semi-monthly pay for millions of
soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, has awarded a contract to
Credant Technologies, Addison, Texas, to protect data stored on
all laptops used within the agency.
