make two radiological "dirty" bombs, officials told a Senate panel last
week.

Senate study finds big gaps in
cargo security
The number of high-risk cargo containers inspected
before entering the United States is "staggeringly low," and government
efforts to keep terrorists from exploiting the system are riddled with
blind spots, according to a study, by a Senate Homeland Security

Oklahoma deploys
HazMat units
The Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security (OKOHS) and
Governor Brad Henry have deployed five Regional Hazardous Materials
(HazMat) Response Units to the communities of Claremore, Lawton,
Moore/Norman, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Company takes heat for airport
security technology failures

- The Newark (N.J.) Police Department has
purchased the 240-channel NiceLog system, from Nice Systems,
Ra'anana, Israel. The system provides fully redundant recording of all
phone and radio communications, offering the Department data protection
and enhanced reliability.
- The U.S. Department of State (DoS) has chosen a credentialing system
for U.S. passports from Trans Digital Technologies, a subsidiary
of Viisage Technology Inc., Billerica, Mass. The Department of
State expects demand for U.S. passports to increase by approximately 20
percent per year and estimates that the US will produce 17 million
passports annually by 2009.
- The Department of the Interior has chosen smart cards from
Oberthur Card Systems, Paris, which will manufacture and issue
all DOI identification cards as part of the Department's HSPD-12
mandate.
- The city of Skagway, Alaska, has chosen card printers and
identification badges from Zebra Card Printer Solutions,
Camarillo, Calif. City officials use the printer to create
identification cards for police officers, fire department personnel and
other city employees.
