DHS wants
'vision' to find tunnels
The Homeland Security Department has asked the
research community to propose innovative methods that would enable the
use of sensors and information technology to detect tunnels, especially
those beneath U.S. borders, according to Government Computer News.
The department's Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency
plans to issue $1 million to $2 million in contracts or grants this year
to push tunnel detection technology forward.

More bomb-sniffing dogs than ever are patrolling the
nation's airports and rail stations, and more are likely on the way as
the federal government tries to blanket the nation's transportation hubs
with highly visible security, according to USA Today.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) plans to add 45 dogs
next year, primarily to patrol subway and rail systems as well as a few
large airports that currently do not use them.

Dolphins and sea
lions may defend Navy base
Dozens of dolphins and sea lions trained to detect and
apprehend waterborne attackers may be sent to patrol a U.S. Naval base
in Washington State, the Associated Press reports.

FBI evaluates
measures for securing laptops and weapons
The FBI's program for safeguarding its weapons and
laptop computers has improved, but there are still shortcomings that
must be addressed, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) report
issued Feb. 12.
DOJ Inspector General Glenn A. Fine, who issued the report, said that
160 weapons and 160 laptops were lost or stolen over a 44-month
period.

- The U.S. Army has awarded Sensis Corp.,
East Syracuse, N.Y., a contract to provide Wide Area Multilateration
(WAM) Surveillance at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. Sensis
Multistatic Dependent Surveillance (MDS) will provide coverage down to
50 ft. with an accuracy of better than 70 meters in a 300 square mile
mountainous region known as area "2306 Alpha."
- ADT Security Services, Boca Raton, Fla., a unit of Tyco
Fire and Security, has received full SAFETY Act coverage from the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security for its Electronic Security
Services.
- Science Applications International Corp., San Diego,
announced today that it has won a prime contract by the Army Contract
Agency, Information Technology, E- Commerce and Commercial Contracting
Center (ITEC4), to provide services under the Information Technology
Enterprise Solutions - 2 Services (ITES-2S) program.
- BIO-key International Inc., Wall, N.J., has announced that
the Indiana State Police (ISP) is expanding its BIO-key MobileCop
deployment by adding 150 MobileCop clients to its Commercial Vehicle
Division.
