Chertoff Discusses Port Security at AAPA Meeting
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff addressed members of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) this week in Washington, D.C. about current and future advances in port security in the United States and abroad.
The AAPA represents port authorities throughout the U.S., Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean and conducts educational and training programs and provides research and information services for port professionals.
In his remarks, Chertoff addressed the widespread thought that port security officials are being negligent in their inspection practices.

TSA Launches Airport-Wide Security Surge
In the wake of the arrests of two Comair airline employees who allegedly carried 14 guns onto an airplane, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented an airport-wide surge in employee security operations.
According to USA Today, Thomas Anthony Muñoz, 22, was arrested and charged March 5 after he used his airline ID to board a flight at San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport carrying a duffel bag containing 13 handguns, an assault rifle and 8 lbs. of marijuana.
Zabdiel Santiago Balaguer, 22, was arrested March 6 and charged with helping Muñoz.

Blogging System Would Aid Communication During Disasters
Information technology experts from Indiana University (IU) are researching ways to improve communications during natural disasters, according to a university report.
Recently, a research team from the IU School of Informatics and the school's Pervasive Technology Labs (PTL) created the Bloomington Emergency Collaborative Information System (BECIS), a project in which bloggers monitor communication sources using the Internet, television and two-way radio traffic, and then contact authorities.

National Computer Forensic Institute Unveiled
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Alabama state officials have unveiled the National Computer Forensic Institute in Hoover, Ala., to assist in the field of computer forensics and digital evidence analysis.
The institute is partially funded by the department's National Cyber Security Division and will be developed by the U.S Secret Service.
It will serve as a national cyber crimes training facility where state and local police officers, as well as prosecutors and judges, will be offered training and equipment.

Procurement Watch

  • Aware Inc. , Bedford, Mass., announced that NASA has deployed its new Biometric Workflow Platform (BWP) as a component of the organization's PIV-compliant credentialing system upgrade. The application performs required enrollment and administrative functions, including collection of biometric fingerprint, facial and applicant signature images, data formatting and credential validation. Using BWP, NASA was able to conduct a biometric enrollment proof-of-concept in less than five weeks, and a fully functional test system able to produce compliant PIV cards was in place in 12 weeks.


  • LocatePLUS Holdings Corp., Beverly, Mass., has been awarded its first national contract with the Federal Government. The company will serve as an integral data provider, supplying select agencies with access to its proprietary database, which contains information on more than 98 percent of US adult population. It is expected that the contract will contribute up to $1.5 million in revenue for 2007.


  • VeriTainer Corp., St. Helena, Calif., announced that VeriSpreader, its radiation detection product for cargo containers, has been awarded "Qualified Anti-Terrorist Technology" (QATT) designation by the Department of Homeland Security for developmental testing and evaluation.


  • The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has placed an order with Pyramid Vision, Princeton, N.J., to purchase a large quantity of VideoDetective Systems to be used in the department's Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). The CEDAP provides emergency response preparedness technology and equipment to eligible applicants, such as small communities and rural areas. VideoDetective is a portable, stand-alone video analysis lab for use by law enforcement that stabilizes and enhances the quality of live and recorded surveillance video.
