Boost On Passenger Security Fee Opposed By Panel
Senate Commerce Committee leaders have voiced opposition to a proposed increase in the passenger security fee intended to fund airport inline baggage screening systems.

During a brief hearing featuring Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Kip Hawley and Cathleen Berrick, director of Homeland security and justice for the Government Accountability Office, Chair Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) questioned why the administration would propose a fee increase after Congress has rejected similar proposals in recent years.

Homeland Security Cyber Gaps Close With Help Of New Bill
Congressman Jim Langevin has introduced the Homeland Security Network Defense and Accountability Act of 2008 (H.R. 5983), a bill designed to improve the cybersecurity posture of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"The security of our Federal and critical infrastructure networks is an issue of national security and one that I have worked on for several years now," says Langevin, chairman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity and Science and Technology. "Through my many cyber hearings, it has become clear that an organization is only as strong as the integrity and reliability of the information that it keeps. Therefore, we must make cybersecurity a national priority."

D.C. Council Decides To Block City Surveillance Project
Privacy advocates are applauding the recent decision by a key committee of the District of Columbia Council to eliminate nearly $900,000 in proposed funding for consolidating the operations of 5,200 city surveillance cameras.

District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty unveiled the Video Interoperability for Public Safety program last month to connect the city’s surveillance cameras to a single network with an advanced monitoring system to assist in prevention of and response to crimes, terrorism and other emergencies. He requested the $900,000 in funding for fiscal year 2009, reports Washington Technology.

CBP Now Accepting Global Entry Pilot Program Applications
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has begun processing applications for the Global Entry pilot program designed to expedite the screening and processing of low-risk, frequent international travelers entering the United States.

The program will kick off June 10 at the three initial airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, and Washington-Dulles International Airport.

Global Entry will be available for U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who are frequent international travelers, provided they have not been found guilty of a criminal offense, charged with a customs or immigration offense or declared inadmissible to the United States under immigration regulations. Biometric fingerprint technology will be used to verify the passenger’s identity and confirm his or her status as a Global Entry participant.

Technical School Grads Targeted For National Border Security Jobs
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently sent letters to more than 100 technical schools around the country, encouraging graduating students to consider pursuing a federal career in a host of available jobs. CBP’s rapid growth has brought thousands of entry-level opportunities in mission support and operational support positions.

“We wanted to reach out now because many talented students are graduating, with no idea of the career opportunities that await them at CBP,” says Robert Hosenfeld, CBP’s assistant commissioner for human resources management. “As the nation’s largest law enforcement agency, CBP offers many choices for grads with a technical background. They can apply what they have learned in the classroom to protecting America, in America.”
