2008 Government Summit Draws Record Crowd
A record number of industry executives turned out for the Security Industry Associations's 2008 Government Summit, June 9-11 in Washington, DC. The three-day program featured informative keynote remarks, engaging panel sessions and plenty of time for networking with state and federal policymakers.

Rep. David Price, chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, kicked-off the Summit with remarks focused on his subcommittee's markup of the FY09 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill. Price indicated the bill would not vary much from previous years.

Several New Towers Will Watch Over Border
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is planning to put up 45 surveillance towers to spot illegal immigrants and upgrade 12 existing ones to create a virtual fence targeting 81 miles of Arizona's U.S.-Mexican border.

Plans revealed in a draft environmental assessment for the "Tucson West" project — the next phase of the Boeing Co.-led SBInet — shows 57 proposed tower sites throughout Southern Arizona with most, 47, in the border region between Sasabe and Sierra Vista.

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in June, Thompson called the TWIC help desk "yet another example of a poorly designed and managed program."

Airport Employees Get Screened Like Passengers
Airport workers are part of a test ordered by Congress that aims to find out whether aviation security can be improved by screening employees every time they enter a restricted zone.

According to the USA Today, the test could lead to hundreds of thousands of airport workers facing the same screening as passengers — a prospect that Congress says could close a security loophole but which opponents call a logistical nightmare.
