U.S. Cities Test
New 911 Text Messaging System
Five cities across the United States are testing a new
national 911 system that would allow communications with police and
other emergency personnel by text message and take advantage of the
latest technology to pinpoint accident scenes.
According to USA Today, call centers in Rochester, N.Y; Bozeman, Mont.;
King County, Wash.; St. Paul; and Fort Wayne, Ind. began testing the
Department of Transportation's Next Generation 9-1-1 system in June with
the goal of replacing the 40-year-old technology that governs how the
nation's 6,000-plus 911 call centers operate.

Cost Of
Radiation Monitors Surpasses 2006 Estimate
The cost to put a new kind of radiation monitor in
place at borders and ports across the country would be far more than the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially told Congress, according
to budget documents and interviews with officials.
The department's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office said in a report two
years ago that the monitors would cost more than $500,000 each to buy
and deploy. On the basis of that report, Congress allowed the office to
move ahead with a $1.2 billion plan to begin deploying the devices.

Thousands Of
Businesses Advised To Secure Chemicals
The federal government has informed 7,000 businesses
that they are considered high-risk terrorist targets because they house
large amounts of chemicals.
The sites — which range from major chemical plants to universities,
food processing centers and hospitals — will need to complete a
vulnerability assessment so the government can decide how to regulate
their security measures in the future.
U.S. intelligence officials say terrorist organizations, including
al-Qaida, favor chemical attack methods because of the severe
consequences they can inflict.

September Will
Mark 5th Annual National Preparedness Month
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has
announced that more than 1,200 national, regional, state and local
businesses and organizations have pledged their support and joined the
2008 National Preparedness Month Coalition. Sponsored by the
department’s Ready Campaign, National Preparedness Month helps to
raise awareness and promote action by Americans, businesses, and
communities on emergency preparedness.
“As we approach our fifth National Preparedness Month, I want to thank
the hundreds of coalition members who are making a difference in their
communities by helping raise the basic level of preparedness in our
country,” Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says.
