TSA Announces Security Recommendations for Motor Carriers
To help ensure the secure transportation of potentially dangerous materials, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced a set of voluntary security recommendations for safe mobility across the nation’s highways. The recommendations apply to certain quantities of materials that could cause a significant impact if used in an act of terrorism.

The voluntary guidelines were developed over a three-year period by TSA's Highway and Motor Carrier Division in collaboration with government and private sector partners. The resulting recommendations are structured to allow motor carriers and shippers to adopt measures tailored to their particular circumstances or operation.

Decrease In Anti-Terror Dollars For Cities Across Nation
Dozens of cities will receive less federal money this year than last for anti-terror programs, The Associated Press has reported.

The grant list, released by the Homeland Security Department, shows that 43 cities are in line for fewer dollars in the current budget year than they got a year earlier.

According to an early copy of the list obtained by the AP, more money is heading to three large cities — Houston, New York and San Francisco — from the $782 million in the Urban Area Security Initiative to help pay for equipment and training.

Security Sweeps Increase For National Rail Company
Beginning this fall, Amtrak rail passengers across the nation will be subject to random security checks and may have their luggage scanned for explosives.

Six months after it set up counterterrorism teams to screen passengers at busy East Coast stations, the rail company is expanding its security sweeps across the country with a new team of special agents in California.

"We want to show we're playing defense" against would-be terrorists, says Amtrak security chief Bill Rooney. "Our focus is counterterrorism. We're thinking along the lines of a Madrid or a London."

TSA Deploys More X-Ray, Imaging And Explosives Detection
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expanding deployment that will bring Advanced Technology X-ray (AT) and Passenger Imaging to 21 of the nation's busiest airports by the end of 2008. TSA also plans to purchase and deploy approximately 300 additional AT X-rays and 80 Passenger Imagers, bringing the total to 900 AT and 120 Passenger Imaging units nationwide in 2009.

"This major step up in technology coupled with our enhanced security training for our officers will elevate security across the board," says Kip Hawley, TSA administrator.
