National Security Spending Plans Asked To Be Redesigned
Anti-terrorism funds are being spent in the wrong places, according to a number of mayors, police chiefs and security experts. In a recently released report, these sources say the money is going toward towns and cities for emergency equipment that rarely gets used while cash-strapped police struggle with crime.

Seven years after Sept. 11, some are asking the government to re-examine spending hundreds of millions of dollars on bomb robots, chem-bio suits and equipment that often go unused.

October Sets Annual Cyber Security Awareness Month In Motion
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Security Division is sponsoring the fifth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month this month, designed to educate the public on the shared responsibility of protecting cyberspace.

The department will recognize this important initiative through a series of events aimed at raising awareness of the ways in which citizens and businesses can better safeguard themselves in cyberspace.

Rail Security Operation Prepares AMTRAK, TSA, Law Enforcement
Amtrak Office of Security Strategy and Special Operations (OSSSO), Amtrak Police, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel and officers from approximately 100 commuter rail, state and local police agencies mobilized late last month for the largest joint, simultaneous Northeast rail security operation of its kind.

The morning rush-hour multi-force security deployment was not in response to any particular threat or incident, but rather a demonstration of an ongoing collaborative effort to expand counter-terrorism and incident response capabilities.

DHS Plans To Improve Visitor Entry Wins Over TIA
The Travel Industry Association (TIA) has recently approved new measures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to strengthen airport security and streamline passenger screening.

TIA praised Congress and the President for enacting legislation that will fund significant reforms to America's visitor security and entry system.

  • ICOP Digital Inc., Lenexa, Kansas, a provider of digital surveillance solutions, has been awarded purchase orders from two U.S. Military bases to equip them with digital in-car video systems.

  • Missouri State University has received a Department of Homeland Security fund of $77,409 for its fire safety program.

  • The U.S. Navy has awarded The Hana Group, Honolulu, $11.4 million for its entry-control-point services, identification checks and surveillance detection technology.

  • Colorado will receive $20.7 million this year in grants from the Department of Homeland Security to support local first responders and Homeland security initiatives in counties and local jurisdictions.
