DHS Releases National Emergency Communications Plan
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released the National Emergency Communications Plan (NECP) to address gaps and determine solutions so that emergency response personnel at all levels of government and across all disciplines can communicate as needed, on demand, and as authorized.

The NECP is the nation's first strategic plan to improve emergency response communications, and complements overarching Homeland security and emergency communications legislation, strategies and initiatives.

Denver Prepares For Upcoming Democratic Convention
Federal and local authorities are girding for huge protests, mammoth traffic tie-ups and civil disturbances at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this month, fearing that the convention will become a magnet for militant protest groups.

Officials say that what makes Denver different than past conventions is the historic nature of Senator Barack Obama’s nomination, an event whose global spotlight could draw tens of thousands of demonstrators, including self-described anarchists who the police fear will infiltrate peaceful protest groups to disrupt the weeklong event.

Threat Of Bioterrorism A Frustrating And Persistent Security Risk
The bioterror threat of anthrax is one considered cheap to do, easy to pull off and tough to respond to, making it one of the top concerns of security officials across the country, and one of their greatest frustrations.

New York City is at the forefront of fighting this threat, with one of the most advanced detection and response systems in the country. But the problem "is not fixed in New York or anywhere else," says Richard Falkenrath, the city's counterterror chief and a former senior White House security aide.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Visits NASA Ames
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff visited NASA's Ames Research Center to see first-hand how NASA technology helps the nation deal with disasters.

During his visit, Chertoff saw a demonstration of the hyperwall-2, a high-resolution visualization system displaying images from the wildfires, and learned about the key role that Ames' Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) plays in preparing for disasters such as earthquakes, floods and fires.

  • AMAG Technology, Codebench and Datastrip have partnered to develop a deeply integrated, government-approved authentication application. When Codebench’s cardholder verification and access control registration software is used with Datastrip’s biometric mobile terminal, the integration package may register new cardholders, can update existing cardholder records with PIV or TWIC data, or spot check the identities of individuals. The cardholder information is automatically entered into AMAG’s Symmetry Security Management System.

  • The Department of Homeland Security is granting approximately $1.8 billion to bolster state, urban area and tribal government efforts to improve the nation’s readiness, response and recovery capabilities for both natural and man-made emergencies.

  • The Department of Homeland Security has contracted Eid Passport Inc., Portland, Ore., provider of secure vendor access management, to implement its RAPIDGate Program at several DHS facilities in the greater Washington, D.C., area.

  • Goodrich Corp., Charlotte, N.C., has received a contract from the Department of Homeland Security to deliver and evaluate a new chemical detection system that uses advanced technology to pinpoint the presence or absence of hazardous chemicals in public places.
