Denver Readies
Security For Democratic National Convention
After 19 months of work, Denver is ready to host the
2008 Democratic National Convention. The convention, starting Aug. 25,
has pushed the host city to step up security measures.
Installing security cameras and changing locks are just a couple of the
steps being taken to protect businesses in the city. CCTV Corp. told
Denver’s CBS affiliate that it has installed more than 400 cameras
downtown in recent weeks. Large venues, including the Denver Athletic
Club, the Sheraton Hotel and the Colorado Convention Center have beefed
up security.

Does Smart
Card Flaw Pose International Issues?
A recent hacking into Boston's mass transit system by
three local university students underscores a broader problem: More than
a billion mass-transit fare cards and door-swipe badges worldwide have a
security weakness.
That's due to a flaw revealed in a smart chip's design earlier this
year. Other agencies that use the chip -- from the London Tube to the
Dutch government -- have scrambled to adopt temporary countermeasures,
says Karsten Nohl, the researcher who first uncovered the trouble. All
their smart cards, he says, need to be shored up or replaced.

Chicago Public
Schools To Increase Security
When Chicago Public Schools open in September, some of
the schools identified as trouble spots will see improved emergency
procedures and more surveillance cameras and security personnel, school
officials said Monday.
The new measures come after 26 students were killed during the last
school year—mostly by gunfire—and 10 more were killed during a
summer of violence, according to Chicago Public Schools.

Big Name
Companies Participate In Olympic Security
China is spending some $6.5 billion on security for
the Games, and much of that has gone to foreigners. But given the
sensitive nature of those contracts, involved companies are often
reluctant to discuss what they are doing or how much they are making.
"We want to avoid answering sensitive questions," says a staffer in the
Beijing office of Panasonic, which has sold surveillance cameras for use
at the Games.
That doesn't mean these companies haven't been aggressive in courting
business. General Electric, IBM, Honeywell, Siemens, Panasonic and LG
have all won major contracts providing security technology for the
Olympics

Sony. Megapixel cameras that aren’t afraid of the dark.
Some megapixel cameras are remarkably scared of the dark. Because their
high resolution comes at the cost of poor low light performance. To
compensate, some rely on slow shutter speeds—which produce severe
motion blur. Sony did better, carefully balancing megapixel resolution
with the super sensitivity of our ExwavePRO and Light Funneling.
Discover Sony megapixel cameras. Because crime never sleeps.
