Study Finds Nonprofits Not Prepared For Disasters
The Washington region's network of nonprofit groups is ill-prepared to respond to a natural disaster or terrorist attack, with a capacity to deal with just 5 percent of the likely need for food and shelter and with no comprehensive communication system to coordinate efforts, according to a recently released emergency preparedness plan.

Considered by its authors to be one of the first regional efforts to spell out a role for nonprofit organizations, the plan is a broad blueprint to fill gaps in the disaster readiness of the area's 4,000 human service groups. It calls on relief organizations to expand their mass care capacities, develop methods to care for pets, better manage volunteers and strengthen mental health services.

ID Theft Still Concern Amid Economic Slowdown
As the Red Flag deadline draws near for financial institutions to develop identity theft protection programs, the results of a new consumer survey conducted by Harris Interactive for Secure Identity Systems found that more than half of bank customers worried about the current state of their bank are concerned that their money and identity are not safe.

According to the survey, bank customers with concerns regarding financial institutions are more worried about identity theft than other banking issues, such as bank fees or financial reimbursement if their bank fails.

The Importance Of Emergency Response Official ID Security
Events such as the Sept. 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina have shown that it is essential that U.S. emergency response official (EROs) have secure identification credentials, that they be electronically verifiable and trusted across multiple jurisdictions. Smart card identity credentials based on Federal Information Processing Standard 201 (FIPS 201) meet these requirements, and take advantage of the enhanced ID infrastructure federal, state and commercial organizations have already put in place, the Smart Card Alliance Identity Council said in a white paper.

The white paper, Emergency Response Official Credentials: An Approach to Attain Trust in Credentials across Multiple Jurisdictions for Disaster Response and Recovery, identifies best practices and defines use cases for ERO credentials based on the FIPS 201 standard, and outlines how these credentials can meet identity goals of trust, privacy, interoperability and usability.

School Bus Safety Partnership Starts Trend

To proactively address traffic safety issues, driver risk management and discouragement of school bus vandalism, theft and assault, ICOP Digital Inc., has released a school bus security camera system to be shown in the Sprint Business Solutions exhibit at the National Association for Pupil Transportation's (NAPT) 34th Annual Conference and Trade Show.

Sony. Megapixel cameras that aren’t afraid of the dark.

Some megapixel cameras are remarkably scared of the dark. Because their high resolution comes at the cost of poor low light performance. To compensate, some rely on slow shutter speeds—which produce severe motion blur. Sony did better, carefully balancing megapixel resolution with the super sensitivity of our ExwavePRO and Light Funneling. Discover Sony megapixel cameras. Because crime never sleeps.
