market surging
A market study from U.K.-based IMS Research has
confirmed that the trend from analog CCTV to network video surveillance
is in full swing.
The world market for network video surveillance products increased by an
impressive 41.9 percent in 2006 and is forecast to continue growing
strongly for years to come. By 2010, the combined market for network
cameras, video servers and NVRs is forecast to exceed $2.6 billion.

outlines ABCs of school security
According to technology research firm Gartner, school

Scientists use
radio waves for explosives detection
Scientists in Japan have developed a technique to
detect explosives such as TNT in landmines or luggage using radio
waves.
Writing in Superconductor Science and Technology journal this week, they
said the technique is superior to conventional methods of detection such
as X-rays, and can identify different types of white powder, from flour
and salt to drugs and explosives, Reuters reports.

- Sony Electronics, Park Ridge, N.J., has
bought $3.6 million in intellectual property from imaging technology
company IPIX. According to a CNet News report, the auction for
the IPIX intellectual property assets -- which includes patents held
domestically and abroad -- took place in open court as part of the
company's bankruptcy sale, according to a court order granting IPIX
permission to sell its intellectual property and assets. Ipix filed for
Chapter 7 bankruptcy on July 31, 2006.
Sony won with the highest offer: $3.6 million for all of IPIX's patents
held both domestically and internationally, as well as any outstanding
patent applications or provisional patent applications on new
inventions. That included more than 35 U.S. patents and patent
applications on technology involving immersive still photography,
360-degree digital immersive video and a camera with gigapixel
resolution, as well as more than 50 patents and patent applications on
the same or similar technology filed in Australia, Austria, Canada,
Germany, the European Union and Japan.

- AMAG Technology, Torrance, Calif., has partnered with
ActivEye, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., to integrate AMAG's Symmetry

Security Corp. as a Honeywell Authorized Dealer for commercial
