TSA Orders More
Security Training For Airport Screeners
Airport screeners are being trained to help them think
creatively about possible security threats that might not be apparent on
first glance, the Associated Press (AP) reports.
“We have to prepare for attacks that don’t fit our procedures,”
says Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator Kip
Hawley.
Hawley told the AP that the screeners will still be vigilant for obvious
threats, but they also want to look for more offbeat threats.

Secure Border
Initiative To Adjust—Not Terminate
The Secure Border Initiative-Network (SBInet) program,
spearheaded by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is entering a new
phase this summer that will include the installation of its first
permanent surveillance towers and changes in the radar and
communications systems, chief CBP spokesperson Jeffrey Robertson told
HSToday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is not "scrapping"
the system, as erroneously reported in an article by the Associated
Press.
The first leg of SBInet, known as Project 28 (P-28) for its border
security work along 28 miles of the southern border in Arizona, will
come to a close with the installation of permanent surveillance towers
to replace the nine temporary towers currently in use to test the
functionality of cameras and radars, Robertson says.

DHS Unveils
Small Vessel Security Strategy
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has
announced a new Small Vessel Security Strategy (SVSS) designed to close
security gaps and reduce risks associated with the potential
exploitation of small maritime vessels. SVSS identifies specific goals
for which security efforts can achieve the greatest impact without
excessive imposition upon the freedom of operation common to the
nation’s waterways.
“We saw quite vividly with the U.S.S. Cole attack that violent
extremists will not hesitate to use any means, large or small, in their
efforts to inflict blows to our maritime assets,” said Homeland
Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Minneapolis
Response To Bridge Collapse Emergency Applauded
A new federal report gives Minneapolis generally high
marks for its response to the Interstate 35W bridge collapse, but finds
room for improvement as well.
The report released by the U.S. Fire Administration and reported by the
Associated Press says that most of the concerns had already been
recognized and addressed by the city, but that they were worth
discussing so other communities can learn from the Aug. 1 disaster,
which killed 13 people and injured 145.
"The city's ability to respond had evolved over several years of
investing heavily and widely in all the elements that make a crucial
difference when disaster strikes," the federal agency said in a
statement to the Associated Press.
