Emergency Preparedness Certification Standard Has Not Emerged
The majority of U.S. companies have a formal, written plan for emergency preparedness, according to a report released by The Conference Board. But a widely adopted certification standard for such plans does not yet exist.

Three-fourths of 302 senior corporate executives surveyed in mid-2007 said that an emergency preparedness plan exists in their companies. The analysis was sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as part of an ongoing research project to assess the effectiveness of security in American companies.

The survey sample was intended to reflect the characteristics of American businesses as defined by size and industry. The sample was divided into three strata: small business (companies with $5 million to $50 million in annual sales); mid-market ($50 million to $1 billion in sales); and enterprise ($1 billion or more in sales). Within these groups of companies, the survey polled executives with responsibility for security, business continuity, crisis management and emergency response efforts.

Market Study Covers The Future Of RFID
According to the latest Market and Policy Overview from the Security Industry Association (SIA), the Stanford Washington Research Group (SWRG) says that most of the excitement and promise of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) supply chain adoption is still three to five years away.

SWRG, which focused on HF, UHF and active RFID technologies designed primarily for inventory and supply chain applications, covers the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) industry's potential and stumbling blocks, as well as a market forecast in the study, as reported by the SIA Research and Technology Department.

SWRG did not include identity card applications using ISO 14443 “contactless smart card” technology, such as ePassports, contactless credit cards, the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and HSPD-12 U.S. government ID cards in the research because they are part of an identity solutions market that is distinctly different from the way most investors view the traditional RFID market – a view focused on identification of things and assets, not people.

Electronic Security Systems Demand To Reach $15.6 Billion By 2012
According to Electronic Security Systems, a study from The Freedonia Group Inc., a Cleveland-based industry research firm, the U.S. electronic security products and systems market is expected to increase 7.8 percent per year to $15.6 billion in 2012. Growth for electronic security systems continues to be driven by a high-perceived risk of crime, despite a long-term trend of falling crime rates. Ongoing technological improvements that enhance the accuracy, ease of use and speed of operation of security systems will also bolster spending. The falling prices of many high-end electronic security components have further boosted gains by increasing market penetration across a broadening customer base. These and other trends are included in the report.

Access controls are expected to achieve the strongest growth through 2012 because of technological innovations that allow an increasingly sophisticated array of clearance options that are more difficult to forge and are easier to operate. These systems can also effectively replace guards.

Health Care Benchmarking Study Points To Areas For Improvement
GE Security Inc., Bradenton, Fla., has announced the results of its Health care Benchmarking Study, the first survey to assess security in the nation’s hospitals in nearly a decade. The results, according to the study conducted in partnership with the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS), indicate that a technology transplant may be needed to help the nation’s hospitals address security concerns.

Survey results indicate hospitals face a variety of frequent security challenges and underscore, in particular, the need for technology-based, integrated security solutions to more effectively protect patients, staff and facilities without interfering with hospital operations. More than 650 hospital security directors participated in the GE Security-IAHSS online survey, covering topics ranging from staffing and technology to policies and procedures.

AirDefense Conducts Comprehensive Study Of Wireless Security
AirDefense, a company in the wireless LAN security market, has unveiled results from its comprehensive study of the wireless airwaves at hundreds of Las Vegas retailers and hotels/casinos. AirDefense found the majority of retailers in Las Vegas using strong encryption protocols to protect data with 65 percent of the 640 Access Points (APs) discovered encrypted with Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or WPA2. In stark contrast, 82 percent of the 1,557 APs discovered in Las Vegas hotels/casinos were using either no encryption or Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), the weakest protocol for wireless data encryption.

AirDefense conducted its study of retail shops, hotels/casinos by capturing the data as it leaked out of the buildings. While consequences of the wireless security vulnerabilities found in AirDefense’s Las Vegas study are difficult to quantify, unauthorized individuals with a desire to steal consumer information, retailer data or to disrupt networks are likely to look for the weakest link in the network, such as misconfigured access points.
