An Overview Of
Demonstration And Protest Statutes
The Security Executive Council (SEC) now offers
compilations of state-specific statutes for preventing illegal or
dangerous behavior during protests, demonstrations, picketing situations
and labor disruptions.
Certain activities that may occur during demonstrations, picketing
situations or labor disruptions are deemed illegal under various state
statutes, and each state deals with such activities differently.
Corporations that need to know how their state defines and regulates
activities ranging from assault, sabotage and terrorist threats to
disorderly conduct and civil disorder usually have to search through
public records from numerous sources to find all the applicable
information to help them keep legal protests safe.

Report Finds
Massachusetts Colleges Lacking Effort For Security
Massachusetts public colleges and universities have
been slow to adopt widely accepted security practices since last year's
Virginia Tech massacre, in many cases failing to apply basic measures,
according to a critical report that calls for sweeping changes across
the state system to avert campus violence.
The report, compiled by a team of specialists and presented to the state
Board of Higher Education recently, cited numerous safety deficiencies
across the state system and urged the 29 public colleges to take
immediate steps to rectify them.

Safety
Self-Assessment Tool Allows Schools To Compare Each
Other
CDW Government Inc. (CDW-G), a source of Information
Technology (IT) solutions to educators and governments, has published
the 2008 School Safety Index Self-Assessment Tool, enabling school and
community leaders to take CDW-G’s School Safety Index survey and
receive an instant score showing how their school or district compares
to the national school safety average, which CDW-G reported in May.
Using the self-assessment tool, school leaders, parents and policy
makers answer 12 questions about physical and cyber safety. Each
question highlights an indicator of strong school safety programs, as
well as the barriers to improved school safety. The self-assessment
results are meant to spark discussion about school security at the local
school level. The CDW-G School Safety Index Self-Assessment Tool is
online at www.schoolsafetyindex.com.

Identity
Theft, Financial Fraud Remain Top Concerns For
Consumers
Fears about identity theft and financial fraud are top
global concerns for consumers, according to the latest results of the
Unisys Security Index. Identity theft is the primary security concern
cited among respondents in nine out of 14 countries, while misuse of
credit or debit card information ranks as the first or second greatest
fear in 12 out of the 14 countries.
The Unisys Security Index presents a social indicator that measures
consumer concern in relation to four areas of security: national,
financial, Internet and personal safety. Unisys conducted the first
global research in August 2007, as part of a bi-annual study to gauge
consumer sentiment about security issues in 14 countries. The current
research includes responses from 13,296 people, polled between March and
April 2008.

Cyber Crime
Sparks Bigger Fear Than Burglary
AVG Technologies, a developer of Internet security
software, has released the results of its own research study that showed
U.S. citizens are more concerned about being the victims of cyber crime
than burglary or assault.
Of the 1,000 PC users surveyed in March 2008 through market research
company Ipsos, 57 percent feel that they will most likely be the victims
of cyber crime with only 21 percent believing they will be victims of
burglary.
