Crime, Natural
Disasters Surveyed As Top Safety Matters
Motorola Inc. has released survey findings that reveal
consumers rank crime as their top safety concern. Results of an
APCO-Motorola survey conducted earlier this year found that first
responders named natural disasters as their highest priority. Regardless
of the emergency, both groups agree that investments in technology are
vital to protect officers and the public they serve.
Marking the beginning of the 2008 hurricane season and National Safety
Month, Motorola’s new consumer survey, which polled approximately
1,000 consumers nationwide, uncovered the public’s top safety
priorities for their local communities.

Acousto-Magnetic Anti-Theft Technology Tests Higher
Than RF
Research has shown Sensormatic acousto-magnetic (AM)
technology from ADT offers retailers better anti-theft alarm detection
rates compared to radio frequency (RF) technology.
The U.S based Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) conducted a
retailer-sanctioned study of theft deterrence across 320 stores. In
tests conducted to measure electronic article surveillance (EAS)
technology effectiveness, this real-world research found, on average, AM
technology detection rates were more than 1.5 times those of RF
technology.

FBI Director
Says Right To Own Guns May Harm Safety Efforts
FBI Director Robert Mueller criticized the U.S.
Supreme Court's recent ruling that Americans have a right to own guns
for self-defense and hunting, saying it may harm efforts to deter
violent crime.
Speaking at a convention of the International Association of Campus Law
Enforcement Administrators in Hartford, Conn., Mueller said the ruling
"does throw a lot of things up in the air."

Survey Shows
Yearly Security Spending Up But Data No Safer
The 2008 Strategic Security Study from InformationWeek
polled nearly 1,100 IT and business professionals about plans and
priorities for securing their companies' assets. It found that getting
the money for security isn't the biggest problem since fully 95 percent
will see their budgets either hold steady or increase this year. The
problem is that the money isn't making data safer.
InformationWeek reports that the problem goes back to how IT lags well
behind other disciplines in adopting systematic risk management
processes. But those technology professionals who have made the leap
into classifying IT assets, assigning values, evaluating threats, then
determining where and how to mitigate risk find the process to be
extremely valuable.

Sony. Megapixel cameras that aren’t afraid of the dark.
Some megapixel cameras are remarkably scared of the dark. Because their
high resolution comes at the cost of inadequate sensitivity. To
compensate, some rely on slow shutter speeds—which produce severe
motion blur. Sony did better, carefully balancing megapixel resolution
with the super sensitivity of our ExwavePRO and Light Funneling
technology. Discover Sony megapixel cameras. Because crime never sleeps.
