Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.) listened to various witnesses testify at a House of Representatives hearing last week on FAA's progress in transitioning to the NextGen satellite-based ATC system, and finally had enough. The 75-year-old congressman, a grandfather of four who takes pride in finding "common sense" solutions, heard representatives from FAA, airlines, general aviation and the National Air Traffic Controllers Assn. union all promote their points of view in the Transportation Committee hearing room and was noticeably irritated by the finger-pointing and back-and-forth over when/if NextGen will be achieved and who is responsible for making it happen.
