Rhode Island
to shutdown for 12 days
In a bid to save $67.8 million in its fiscal year (FY)
2010 budget, Rhode Island will shut down government services for 12
nonconsecutive days between September and June 2010. The state also
plans to implement other cost-saving measures, including withholding
from cities and towns the fourth-quarter proceeds from the state’s

Report shows
high levels of pesticide in water
Atrazine, a pesticide that affects human and animal
hormones, has contaminated much of the nation’s watershed and drinking
water, according to a report released this week by the New York-based
National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The pesticide is the most
commonly detected pesticide in U.S. waters and has been tied to poor
sperm quality in humans and hermaphroditic amphibians, according to
NRDC’s “Poisoning the Well: How the EPA is Ignoring Atrazine
Contamination in Surface and Drinking Water in the Central United

NLC discusses
public safety at White House conference
Representatives from the Washington-based National
League of Cities (NLC) joined mayors, law enforcement officials,
community groups, foundations, and scholars at the White House
Conference on Gang Violence and Crime Control last week to discuss
effective strategies for preventing criminal activity and eliminating
the influence of gangs in cities. The conference highlighted the
importance of municipal leadership and city partnerships with the

Air quality
district receives ARRA grant
The Diamond Bar, Calif.-based South Coast Air Quality
Management District (AQMD), the air pollution control agency for all of
Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San
Bernardino counties, has received a $45.4 million grant from the U.S.
Department of Energy to develop a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle PHEV.
The grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The Hardin County, Texas, Appraisal District has
contracted with St. Charles, Ill.-based THE SIDWELL COMPANY to rectify
errors in the district’s geographic information system.
Montcalm County, Mich., Central Dispatch has purchased computer-aided
dispatch, records management and mobile computing software from Lake
Mary, Fla.-based SUNGARD PUBLIC SECTOR.
The Chicago Transit Authority has contracted with New York-based PARSONS
BRINCKERHOFF to manage rail replacement and tunnel rehabilitation on its
Blue Line subway.
