NLC survey:
Cities’ financial distress will continue beyond
2010
The effects of the recession will continue to drag
down city budgets beyond 2010, according to a survey by the
Washington-based National League of Cities (NLC). The situation reflects
the typical 18-month time lag seen in the effects that economic shifts
have on city budgets that results from the collection of tax revenues
only at certain times of the year, according to NLC. Read the entire

This week is
the deadline for Crown Communities entries
Friday is the deadline to submit nominations for the
Crown Communities awards.
Crown Communities nominations can include any project completed by a
city or county government between November 2008 and August 2009. The
winners are featured in the December issue. Projects can encompass
virtually any aspect of local government, including — but not limited
to — water supply, streets and highways, parks and recreation,
wastewater collection and treatment, public finance, public
transportation, stormwater and flood control, technology, solid waste
collection and treatment, public safety, county management, building
maintenance and construction, and grounds maintenance.
There are no restrictions on who can submit nominations. Download entry

Crack nearly
keeps Bay Bridge closed past Labor Day
After a long weekend of major refurbishment, the San
Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reopened on Tuesday despite concerns that a
crack in the bridge structure that work crews discovered Sunday would
keep the bridge closed until Wednesday. “Thanks to exceptional
teamwork and dedication, the Bay Bridge will be reopening this
morning,” California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Director
Randy Iwasaki said at a Tuesday morning press conference. Read the

NLC to hold
Webcast on swine flu
The Washington-based National League of Cities’
(NLC) NLC TV is producing a town hall meeting Webcast to discuss best
practices in dealing with an expected resurgence in the H1N1 swine flu
this fall. The Webcast, scheduled for Sept. 10 from 3 to 4:30 p.m., will
discuss how cities, health departments, school boards and schools can

Report: 56
percent of local governments have reduced IT energy
costs
Local governments are succeeding in lowering their
information technology (IT) energy costs, according to a survey by
Vernon Hills-based CDW Government. However, the survey also found that
the recession has forced some agencies to forgo longer-term savings
created by energy efficient equipment and choose to buy cheaper but less

exacerbates local transit funding problems, report
says
The fare increases and reductions in public
transportation services experienced across the country could have been
lessened or prevented by more flexibility in federal funding rules,
according to a report from Washington-based Transportation for American
(TA) and the Chicago-based Transportation Equity Network (TEN). The
report, “Stranded at the Station: The Impact of the Financial Crisis
in Public Transportation,” also identifies the 10 public
transportation systems that are experiencing the highest budget

investigations software from Pottstown, Pa.-based CODY SYSTEMS.
The Florida Department of Transportation has contracted with New
York-based PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF to engineer and inspect the
reconstruction of U.S. Highway 19 in Pinellas County, Fla.
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation has contracted with
Overland Park, Kan.-based URS CORP. to staff its MassRIDES travel
assistance program.
