Wayne, Ind., Public Works Director Bob Kennedy as its 2009 “Public
Works Leader of the Year.” The magazine presents the award annually to

Survey: New
transportation funding needed
The federal gasoline tax is not enough to finance the
nation’s highway system, so new funding for transportation projects is
needed, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans from Kansas City,
Mo.-based HNTB Holdings. The “America THINKS” online survey by
Kelton Research also found that 67 percent of respondents were willing
to pay more in tolls, taxes or public transit fares to fund
transportation improvements in their area, such as highway capacity

Local
governments can help control childhood obesity, report
says
Local governments can do more to help prevent
childhood obesity, according to a report from the Washington-based
National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (NAS IM). The
report, “Local Government Actions to Prevent Childhood Obesity,”
includes specific examples of how local officials across the nation have
taken steps to reduce childhood obesity rates. Read the entire article

new 911 systems
Two counties are trying new 911 dispatch technology
that foreshadows the advances promised by Next Generation 911 systems.
The new systems enable emergency personnel to precisely locate cell
phone calls and operate 911 services jointly from separate locations.
