USGS report: Road deicing contributes to high chloride levels in streams
Road salt for deicing may be causing elevated levels of chloride, a component of salt, in many urban streams and groundwater across the northern U.S., according to a new government study. Other chloride sources include wastewater treatment, septic systems and farming operations. Read the entire article here.

ICMA report: Recession has changed local governments
Local government operations have changed permanently as a result of the recent financial crisis, according to a report from the Washington-based International City/County Management Association (ICMA). Eighty percent of the more than 1,500 local governments that answered a survey that is part of the report, “How It Plays in Peoria: The Impact of the Fiscal Crisis on Local Governments” reported that the financial crisis had either “moderately” (44 percent), “significantly” (30 percent) or “severely” (6 percent) affected their local government. New transportation funding methods popular, survey says
Voters remain open to allowing states to explore non-traditional methods for funding transportation projects, according to a survey of states released Wednesday by the Atlanta-based Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG). The report, “Coping with Transportation Funding Deficits: A Survey of States,” summarizes states’ efforts to increase transportation funding since 2000. Read the entire article here.

  • NASCIO recognizes National Cyber Security Awareness Month
    October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the Lexington, Ky.-based National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) is marking the month with public relations and educational events aimed at increasing awareness and prevention of cyber crime. This is the sixth year for National Cyber Security Awareness Month, which is organized by the National Cyber Security Alliance, a consortium of government agencies and private industry sponsors.     Public libraries are Internet hotspots, according to study
    Public libraries are becoming hotspots of Web access and technological job training for visitors, according to a study by the Chicago-based American Library Association. "Libraries Connect Communities 3: Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study 2008-2009," released on Sept. 15, found that more than 71 percent of all libraries (and 79 percent of
    rural libraries) report they are the only source of free access to computers

    NACo reschedules stimulus reporting Webinar
    The Washington-based National Association of Counties’ (NACo) Webinar, “Essentials of Recovery Act Reporting,” originally scheduled for Sept. 17, has been rescheduled for Sept. 29 at 2:00 p.m. EST. NACo rescheduled the Webinar after White House officials told the association that some of the important information about the reporting site, www.federalreporting.gov, that was to be included in the Webinar to help counties complete the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) reporting process, is not ready or not yet publicly available.
