NACo prepares
counties for ARRA reporting deadline
Oct. 10 is the deadline for recipients of American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to report how they have used
the money so far, and the Washington-based National Association of
Counties (NACo) is trying to prepare its members for the unprecedented
event. NACo will hold a Webinar tomorrow to provide updated information

Philadelphia
avoids layoffs, service cuts
Philadelphia officials have cancelled “Plan C” for
balancing the city’s budget as a result of the Pennsylvania
legislature’s approval of House Bill 1828, which will allow the city
to issue a temporary sales tax hike and give it a two-year reprieve on
city pension payments. Plan C could have resulted in 3,000 layoffs of
city employees and cuts to library, recreation and health services. Read

Cities tell
scooter riders to 'park it'
Cities across the country are encouraging residents to
ride scooters as a way to reduce emissions, traffic congestion and gas
consumption. But, if people are riding scooters, they have to have
places to park them. So, cities are getting creative in addressing
parking issues, especially in urban areas where spaces are sometimes

Wildfire
assessment course now available
Fire and forestry professionals for state and local
governments can learn how to prevent wildfires through a new course
offered by the Quincy, Mass.-based National Fire Protection
Association's Firewise Communities program. The course, "Conducting a
Community Assessment in the Wildland/Urban Interface: Beginning the
Firewise Process," explains how to educate residents of fire-prone areas

North Carolina
implements plastic bottle landfill ban
As of Oct. 1, plastic bottles are no longer welcome in
North Carolina landfills. The goal of the ban is to enhance plastic
recycling efforts and, subsequently, protect the environment while

Contract Announcements
|
The Prichard, Ala., Water Works and Sewer Board has
renewed its public-private partnership with Fort Washington, Pa.-based
SEVERN TRENT to operate and maintain the city’s water and wastewater
facilities.
San Diego has contracted with Broomfield, Colo.-based MWH to convert
storm drain-related drawings into the city’s geographic information
system.
Lake County, Ind., has contracted with St. Charles, Ill.-based THE
SIDWELL COMPANY to provide GIS services for a reassessment of real
property in the county.
