USCM report:
Cities to remain in recession until next year
Federal assistance is now necessary to prevent
economic conditions in the nation's major cities from deteriorating
further, according to a report from the Washington-based U.S. Conference
of Mayors (USCM). Sixty percent of 158 mayors surveyed in 41 states and
Puerto Rico say a targeted program of fiscal assistance is needed to
help prevent further drastic budget cuts that translate into losses of

AASHTO report
lists 50 model transportation projects
From the seven North Carolina bridges replaced in 45
days to the Utah highway that reduced commuters’ drive time from 42 to
16 minutes, a new report released by the Washington-based American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
highlights 50 projects nationwide that showcase smart transportation
solutions by state transportation departments. AASHTO officials say the
projects emphasize the need for state and local governments to make
smart decisions when implementing similar projects in their areas. Read

abstracts
Experts in the field of water efficiency are invited
to submit abstracts for the third WaterSmart Innovations (WSI)
Conference and Exposition, slated for Oct.6-8, 2010, in Las Vegas.
Government employees, policy makers, professionals, scientists,
organizations, public and private institutions, students and others
working in an industry related to water efficiency are qualified to
submit abstracts for oral presentations, panel discussions or workshops.

Governments,
agencies work to save Puget Sound

region have joined with non-profit environmental protection groups to
launch a public outreach campaign encouraging residents to end behaviors

reduce the flow of 140,000 pounds of toxic chemicals that run off into

EPA seeks
comments on stormwater rule survey
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is
seeking comments on a proposed regulation to help strengthen stormwater
regulations and reduce stormwater discharges from newly developed and
redeveloped sites. Owners and operators of municipal separate storm
sewer systems, as well as state government officials, are among the

Not all
‘john schools’ are alike
“John schools” — diversion programs that seek to
reduce prostitution rates by educating sex customers about the negative
effects of their actions — typically follow the model set by San
Francisco’s First Offender Prostitution Program. However, as the
program spreads to new communities, it is implemented in different ways.
