Worst is yet to
come for county budgets, survey says
The nation’s counties, small and large, are still
struggling to cope with declining revenues as a result of the recession,
according to a new survey by the Washington-based National Association
of Counties (NACo). And, while the current budget crisis is the worst in
nearly two decades, many survey respondents said they expect next year

Report
identifies states in financial peril
Loss of state revenues, large budget gaps, increasing
joblessness, high foreclosure rates, legal and poor money-management
practices have brought California and several other states to the brink
of financial disaster, according to a report from the Washington-based
Pew Center on the States. The report, “Beyond California: States in
Fiscal Peril,” also indicates that those states’ financial woes can

NLC president
to speak at White House job summit
Rebuilding cities’ infrastructure, fostering
regional and local economies, and coordinating federal and local energy
efficiencies are some of the priorities Washington-based National League
of Cities (NLC) President Kathleen Novak wants to stress in her
participation in President Obama’s upcoming job summit. The summit is
scheduled for December, and Michael Strautmanis, chief of staff to
Valerie Jarrett, special advisor to the President for Intergovernmental
Relations, attended NLC’s annual Congress of Cities & Exposition last
week in San Antonio to invite the league to participate in the summit.

Privacy
concerns pose challenge for 2010 Census
Local governments are educating residents about the
importance of filling out their 2010 U.S. Census forms by April 1,
because an accurate count will affect how much federal funding they will
receive for priorities like roads and schools. The obstacles to their
success include proving to some residents that the U.S. Census Bureau
can be trusted with personal information, communicating with
non-English-speaking residents and the paperwork, according to the

Coalition
calls on Congress to adopt ‘complete streets’
program
In the last 15 years, more than 76,000 Americans have
been killed while crossing or walking along streets in their
communities, including 3,906 children under 16 who have been killed this
decade alone, according to a report from the Washington-based
Transportation For America (TFA). TFA’s “Dangerous by Design”
report urges Congress to include a plan for safer street designs in the

systems for the San Pedro Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control
system in San Pedro, Calif.
