New York governor drops bid for reelection
New York Gov. David Paterson has dropped his bid for reelection amid what he called “an accumulation of obstacles that have obfuscated me from bringing my message to the public,” the latest being questions regarding his administration’s possible interference in a staff member’s domestic violence case. However, Paterson said at a press conference Friday that he plans to complete his current term. Read the entire article here.

Map tracks use of homeland security funds
An interactive map that details the use of homeland security readiness funds in all 50 states is the central element of “Homeland Security: Boom and Bust,” a report from the Washington-based Center for Public Integrity (CPI) and the Berkeley, Calif.-based Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR). CPI and CIR compiled the data from state and federal documents to reveal possible misuse of the funds, such as the purchase of unnecessary equipment. Read the entire article here.

Florida County residents give budget suggestions online
Hillsborough County, Fla., is using multiple social media Web sites to gather public input on the county’s fiscal year 2011 budget. County officials are expecting another shortfall in that budget, and they are asking residents what services matter to them most. Read the entire article here.

Arkansas Energy Office announces grants to cities and counties
The Arkansas Energy Office (AEO), a division of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC), has announced a $5 million grant program for small cities and counties to implement energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is providing funding for the program through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Weekly snapshot submission
Each week, American City & County selects a photograph depicting a local scene that will appear on www.americancityandcounty.com. The photographs should be taken by city, county or state employees. At the end of the month, one photo is selected to print in American City & County magazine. To submit a photo, simply send an e-mail to edward.brock@penton.com. Attach the digital photo in jpeg format with a 300 dpi resolution, 5X7 inches. Include a description of where the picture was taken, when and the photographer's name. You will be notified by e-mail if your photograph is chosen to appear on the Web and in print.
