Census data shows loss in government retirement systems
State and local government retirement systems lost $178.8 billion in 2008, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Most of the loss was seen in total securities, which comprise the largest component of holdings and assets. Read the entire article here.

KAB announces 2010 Graffiti Hurts grant program
Stamford, Conn.-based Keep America Beautiful (KAB) has begun its 2010 Graffiti Hurts Grant Program, which offers three grants of $2,500 to help communities step up local graffiti prevention activities. This year’s program will present one grant to a community with a population under 75,000, one to a community with between 75,000 and 250,000 residents, and one to a community with more than 250,000 residents. NASCIO releases report on the use of ‘smartphones’ in government
Allowing for the use of personal “smartphones” at work may help state CIOs control costs, according to a report from the Lexington, Ky.-based National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). NASCIO’s “Security at the Edge — Protecting Mobile Computing Devices Part II: Policies on the Use of Smartphones in State Government” focuses on the use of smartphones and includes a survey of state policies and security measures for allowing or disallowing personally owned smartphones to be connected to government networks. Survey finds support for increased public transportation funding
Americans overwhelmingly support increased access to public transportation and safe walking and biking, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Washington-based Transportation for America campaign. The poll found strong support for increased transportation options and accountability for future spending across geographic areas and political lines. Read the entire article here.

New York and Microsoft offer free computer training for unemployed
New York will offer free computer training for unemployed residents throughout the state through Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft’s “Elevate America” program. As part of the program, the state’s Department of Labor will distribute 71,000 vouchers for online training and certification through One-Stop Career Centers across the state.
