The Newhall County, Calif., Water District has received an Award of Recognition from the Los Angeles and Orange County chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council for its LEED Gold-certified office building. The 14,500-square-foot building, which opened in November 2010, features solar panels on the roof and solar tubes in the ceiling to carry natural sunlight to offices, as well as drought-tolerant landscaping, a pervious parking lot and computer-controlled air conditioning.
Denver-based CH2M HILL has received the Global Water Award for Water Company of the Year from the International Desalination Association and Global Water Intelligence. The award is presented annually to the water company that made the most significant contributions to the development and advancement of the global water sector over the past year.
Walnut Creek, Calif.-based Brown and Caldwell has received the 2012 Grand Prize for Planning and the 2012 Grand Prize for Design from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. The planning award recognizes the firm's work on the $460 million DC Water Biosolids Management Program, which will cut digester needs by more than half, produce Class A biosolids, and generate 13 megawatts of renewable power. The design award recognizes the firm's work on the Lake Oswego, Ore., Interceptor Sewer, which replaced a sewer line that spans nearly 2 miles in the lake with the world's first buoyant gravity sewer.
