Verizon Says 'Extreme Alert' Was Only a Test

Verizon sent a mass text message from "U.S. Govern" warning NJ citizens to take shelter in a civil emergency, prompting a large increase in calls to local police. The message -- from the new Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) -- was a test, according to Verizon, but not marked as such. Local authorities were not notified of a test. CMAS alerts, from local, state or federal agencies, must be approved by FEMA before public release. CMAS is expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2012.
