Siemens' New Controls Aimed at Job Shops
Siemens Drive Technologies is targeting job-shop operations with its new control architecture, Sinumerik 828D, that it says frees shops from G-code-intensive programming. The package combines CNC, PLC, operator panel and axis control for six CNC measurement circuits and presents these in a single operator panel. Siemens states that Sinumerik 828D offers users “intelligent kinematic transformations, an efficient tool management system and 80-bit floating point nano precision.” Read the full story here


Toyota to Increase 4-Cylinder Production in North America
Toyota Motor Manufacturing plans to expand its plant in Huntsville, AL, to produce four-cylinder engines, with the new capacity to be in operation by summer 2011. Toyota currently produces 145,000 V6 engines and 216,000 V8 engines annually there. The expansion will bring total engine capacity of 577,000 units. Read the full story here


Milacron Reorganized, Recapitalized, Relaunched
Milacron LLC completed its purchase of the businesses and assets of Milacron Inc., the reorganized manufacturer of plastic molding and extrusion machines and industrial fluids. The purchase completes Milacron’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy and, according to the new owners, puts it in “a stronger competitive position than at any time in the past decade.” Read the full story here

The Invention Factory, a three-year study sponsored by the University of Hawaii at Manoa Curriculum Research & Development Group and funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF), seeks to stimulate interest in math and science by providing afterschool programs that thrust students into unusual activities.
