Mitsubishi Picks Aluminum Over Carbon Fiber for Jet Design
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. will use aluminum rather than carbon-fiber composites to form the wings of the series of regional jets it is planning to introduce in about five years. The manufacturer shifted its design plans because it concluded said that composites would require more material to achieve the necessary structural strength, and thus would not achieve the expected savings in weight. Machining CFRP
Having trouble machining carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites? Here's some advice. CFRPs cover a wide range of layered and matrix materials using woven carbon fiber, resins, plastics, and can also include thin layers of metals. However, because of the different physical properties of the materials used in the layers that make these composites hard, tough and strong, they are extremely abrasive and difficult to machine. Without tools designed for the demanding cutting environment, tool life can be very short when machining CFRP composites. Read the full story here

Tips for custom clamping
With manufacturing operations using higher cutting speeds that place greater force on workholding equipment, choosing the correct system to hold a workpiece is trickier than ever. These tips will help you obtain a customized clamping solution. Following these guidelines, and staying close to your vendor, will help coping with the challenges of today’s demanding production environments. Read the full story here

New tools for milling aluminum

Handheld machine-health monitor
This handheld unit has been designed to help simplify machine maintenance and prevent costly failures. The instrument monitors the health of bearings used on rotating equipment throughout a shop, such as machine spindles, pumps, fans, motors, compressors, gear boxes, cranes and conveyors. The low-cost unit puts the benefits of machine monitoring within reach of any maintenance and operation team. Read the full story here

Cutting oils for Swiss-type machining
These new cutting oils are designed for high lubricity, fast heat dissipation, good part finish and long tool life in Swiss-type machining applications. Several types of the fluid are available to suit soft- and hard- metal applications. The formulation eliminates wax-like buildup on a machine’s slide surfaces, which can catch chips that create abrasion, loss of accuracy and high machine maintenance costs.
