A new toolholder product range has been introduced that is well
suited for heavy-duty metal cutting and rough milling. The universal
toolholder is based on the expansion technology system with a solid body
as a pressure medium and is quickly clamped using a simple actuation
key. This saves the user set-up time and reduces unproductive machine
down-times.

A shop recently invested in a single-spindle machining center that
enabled them to run large parts with high feed/speed capabilities. When
the shop transferred its conventional tooling and methodology to the new
equipment, the process worked, but was not optimizing the capabilities
of the new machining center. A tooling supplier suggested trying a
heavy-duty square shoulder mill designed to provide maximum
metal-removal with free-cutting inserts. The high-feed milling technique
quickly removed a lot of material, and cutting forces are directed
axially back into the spindle. This method provides outstanding
performance when machining with large overhangs. By using a high-feed
mill boring time was reduced by over 50 percent. Also, the cutter only
requires seven inserts, versus thirty two with previous tooling, so the
shop cut machining time in half with one-quarter the number of inserts.

A line of bits that will not fall out when inserted into a sixpoint
socket has been introduced. The new socket bits are half the cost of
traditional socket bits because users can utilize them with their own
six-point sockets, and Protanium steel makes each bit up to 20% stronger
than competing tools, said the company. Two non-magnetic buttons on the
sides of each bit locks it securely into the socket.

Maybe your shop is like others that experience short tool life and
reduced productivity due to interrrupted cuts when machining 304
stainless steel. At one shop severe interrupted cuts were affecting tool
wear and they were only able to achieve about 1.5 parts per insert due
to edge chippage. With a new insert grade for stainless steel and a
chipbreaker with a positive cutting angle, cutting forces were reduced
to allow for higher cutting speeds and increased productivity while tool
life was tripled. However, there was still an edge-chipping problem. A
larger nose radius on inserts helped increase edge strength, and
feedrate was increased. Productivity doubled and tool life jumped to
seven-times what the shop experienced with their original setup.
