Lighter. Faster. Stronger.
Airlines are under pressure to reduce emissions while keeping costs
down. To achieve this companies such as Boeing and Airbus need to work
closely with suppliers to reduce the weight and improve the fuel
efficiency of their aircraft. Lighter components developed using
advanced manufacturing technologies are the answer.
One example of a literally "cutting-edge" technology is the Mega-Flute
tooling range, jointly developed by Rolls-Royce and Sheffield-based
cutting tool manufacturer, Technicut.

As routers become more accurate and capable they are used
increasingly to machine parts that, in the past, typically were machined
on CNC milling machines. Routers with large machine tables and coupled
with highspeed spindles are ideal for machining thin and small parts
from sheet or plate material.

Seco Tools Inc.’s Steadyline vibration damping shell mill holders
feature a passive dynamic damping system that offers up to three times
the rigidity of equivalent solid holders. The result is greater
productivity, longer tool life, and improved quality. Vibration becomes
a concern as the size and complexity of components creates the need to
machine difficult-to-reach areas and deep cavities, resulting in common
use of long-overhang tools that tend to introduce vibration into the
machining process.

Urethane grippers combine secure workholding with protection for
finished surfaces, particularly in assembly, machining, inspection or
repair operations. The nonmarking, non-staining grippers feature a
bubbled urethane surface that provides a non-slip grip and allows air to
escape so no suction is created between the contact surface and the top
of the rest pad as it is compressed.

Measure Up to 99
Dimensions on Machined Parts — Instantly
The KEYENCE IM-6000 Image Dimension Measurement System revolutionizes
and simplifies dimensional measurement. Place parts on the sample tray
and press the measure button. The IM-6000 instantly measures up to 99
user designated dimensions with 0.01µm repeatability and go/no-go data
display. An Evaluation Library stores part images/data. No comparators,
positioning mechanisms, projectors or microscopes required.

Benchmarks for Machine Shops
|
2009 Benchmarks for Machine Shops is NOW AVAILABLE
American Machinist's Benchmarks for Machine Shops is the only set
of operating metrics specifically for machine shops.
Included within the Benchmarks for Machine Shops is a 12-point job shop
management dashboard.
A dashboard is a set of key indicators that can tell you, at a glance,
how your business is running. It can also be used to reflect a company's
unique operations rather than a generic set of metrics that could apply
to any industry.
You can find the 12-point dashboard in:
