There’s no
business like show business
Despite the show organizer’s valiant promotional
efforts, PRINT 09 traffic was sparse on some days, a sobering reminder
of a tough economy and an even tougher industry. Attendance figures
aren’t available yet, but even a casual observer would concede the
show didn’t generate the same turnout as past events.
Scott Bieda, our publisher, also heads the Penton Media Research
Department. Bieda’s researchers conduct more than over 100 studies per
year across 30 different markets for clients such as TD Ameritrade,
AARP, American Express, DuPont, Federal Express, General Mills, John
Hancock, IBM and Merrill Lynch.
So when the boss told me he had commissioned and completed a study that
would include data on our audience’s 2008 Graph Expo and PRINT 09
attendance plans as well as evolving printer attitudes toward sources
used and preferred for purchasing related information (including trade
shows and alternative promotional vehicles), I was intrigued. The
results, from 650 respondents, may surprise some industry observers—I
look forward to sharing them some time in the future.
I did find some inspiration at the show. “Recovery is on the way,”
says Andy Paparozzi, NAPL’s chief economist. “In 2010, our industry
will grow for the first time in three years.”
With sales, prices and profitability at all-time lows, this was welcome
news. But Paparozzi offered one caveat: “Absolutely no one is
guaranteed a share of that growth or can assume recovery is going to
make everything right.”
Key trends at the show included more inkjet presses than you could shake
a stick at (and attendant postpress solutions); more integrated
integration (look for our Web to Print report next month); and some new
vendors. “There was a strong and well organized presence from Chinese
suppliers,” notes pundit Gordon Pritchard (www.qualityinprint.blogspot.com).
“They're coming on much stronger than in previous years.”
As always, thanks for reading!

A great
response to ‘think before you print’ nitwits
During PRINT 09’s Educational Summit, Jerry Waite, a
professor at the University of Houston, described his response to people
who use “Think before you print,” or “Please consider your
environmental responsibility before printing any documents” in their
e-mail signature blocks: “The next time you worry about printing out
an e-mail, consider that paper is made from easily renewable material
while the device you're using to read this is not. Paper is recycled and
recyclable. Scrap paper is not toxic waste. However, the device you're
using to read this e-mail will be toxic waste when you’re finished
with it.”
