I’d like a
half caf on-demand book
Third Place Books (Lake Forest Park, WA) recently
installed an Espresso Book Machine. The on-demand machine essentially
lets the book store add two million titles to its inventory via Google
Books.
“Google's two million book titles are very old — all at least 86
years, most hundreds, and some thousands of years,” notes AP columnist
Steve Johnson. “Yet, the printing is new. The vast majority of these
books aren't in print right now. If all goes as announced, the printing
will be done on demand, in a bookstore, without any of us being
involved.”
Our challenge, as print providers, says Johnson, is to get involved. See
americanprinter.com/how-to/printing-involved-print-evolution-1009.
Here’s what Wired magazine had to say: www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/09/google-books-publish-on-demand.
You can see a video of the Espresso machine in action here: www.thirdplacebooks.com/node.
As always, thanks for reading!
