In perfect harmony
It’s a shame there were no reality TV programs in the 1970s. In the O’Brien house, nine people shared 1.5 bathrooms. (That’s a show right there!) We had no dishwasher, microwave or car. It was kind of like “The Waltons” except we also lacked an eponymous mountain, sawmill and truck. Come to think of it, we didn’t even have overalls (and if we did they would have been the much despised “Toughskins” brand).

Before the age of computers and cable networks, we entertained ourselves. The big kids picked on the little kids. Some of this was harmless, such as when my brother Pat began referring to my sister as “Quagmire The Human Swamp.”

When squabbles erupted, my brother John often acted as the peacemaker. Sometimes he sang a song we had learned in school: “Let there be peace on earth.” John is a terrible singer and when he came to the impossibly high notes of, “To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally,” it was hard not to laugh.

Some months ago, John was asked to help mediate a labor dispute at his company. Negotiators also included a congressman and, at one point during a break, they were the only two people in the conference room. “I’ve always wondered about something,” said John. “We have service academies for the Army, Navy and Air Force. Why don’t we have a Peace Academy?” “I don’t know,” said the congressman. “What an excellent idea.”

The congressman has moved onto to other issues. But that’s my wish for 2010. Let there be peace on earth. And let it begin with me.

As always, thanks for reading!
