More on the mergers & acquisitions front
When I started writing this newsletter, the Quad/Worldcolor acquisition was still hot stuff. But yesterday, R.R. Donnelley and Bowne & Co announced R.R. Donnelley will acquire Bowne & Co., Inc., a provider of shareholder and marketing communications services. The all cash deal is valued at approximately $481 million, or $11.50 per share.

Bowne has operations in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia. "Bowne is an exceptional fit with RR Donnelley," said Thomas J. Quinlan III, RR Donnelley's President and CEO. "This combination satisfies all of the strategic imperatives that we evaluate as we consider acquisitions.”

I must finish this newsletter, but stay tuned!

As always, thanks for reading!

Ipex 2010 preview
Held every four years in Birmingham, England, Ipex is the world's largest English language print trade show. This year’s event will take place May 18th to May 25th.
The 2006 event attracted more than 100,000 attendees from 159 countries.

The show is spread out among 11 halls, with 580 exhibitors representing global manufacturers from 38 countries.

I joined more than 75 international graphic arts journalists at the Ipex Media Summit last month. Vendors previewing their show offerings included Canon, CP Bourg, Domino, Fujifilm, Oce, Pitney Bowes, Ricoh, Xerox, and web-to-print vendor RedTie.

Inkjet technology generated the most buzz. Fujifilm showcased its sheetfed, digital inkjet press, the Jet Press 720. Beyond its water-based ink, it requires only two consumables: a wash for the inkjet print heads and a solution used for pre-coating the paper prior to printing. Fujifilm estimates that the Jet Press 720 will be particularly competitive for print runs under 2,000 sheets.

Domino will launch its brand new four-color drop on demand ink jet solution via a product line dubbed “The N-Series.” Domino will show the N600 digital label printing press in a reel-to-reel configuration with a print width of 13.1 inches.

Pitney Bowes has teamed with HP to create its inkjet solution for the transactional mail space. The IntelliJet Printing System combines Pitney Bowes’ front-end expertise with HP's T300 inkjet web press. Starting with the North American market Pitney Bowes will begin customer installations in Q1 2010.

Xerox remained coy about its inkjet intentions. “We delivered breakthrough toner-based color continuous feed solutions allowing new levels of cost, image quality and speed for transpromotional applications,” said Eric Armour, president, Xerox Global Business Group. “Our new offering will meet similar requirements for those looking for an inkjet option.”
