    Cutting classes

Last week, we asked what readers thought about Hawaii canceling school on 17 Fridays to reduce its budget deficit. Here is some of your feedback:
    • "One thing about canceling class is that it gets everyone’s attention," says one reader. "Whether it really solves anything or provides an opportunity for future reforms remains to be seen."

This week, a study of the Chicago school system concludes that its policy of closing academically failing schools has not led to improved performance for most students in their new schools. Do you think requiring academically failing schools to close is an effective way to improve education for students?

    A. Yes. Closing an academically failing school is a drastic but necessary step to end a track record of unacceptable performance.
    B. No. Unless a district has the capacity to move displaced students to campuses with stronger academic results, closing a failing school is a cosmetic step that is unlikely to benefit students.
    C. Other.

    What do you think?
