The baking industry’s first online trade show, eBakery-Show International 2009, will move its opening date from April 1 to August 1. The move is in response to the recession, according to trade show planners.

The American Bakers Association (ABA), Washington, D.C., announced that Norm Rich, retired president and C.E.O. of Weis Markets and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) vice chairman, will be the retail headline speaker on Monday, April 6, during the 2009 ABA Convention at the Ritz-Carlton Resort on Amelia Island, Fla.

TLC show to feature retail cake specialist Buddy Valastro
Move over Jon and Kate (and their brood of eight). Buddy Valastro is coming to television on the cable channel TLC. The as yet unnamed program began filming in Valastro’s bakery, Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, N.J., on Feb. 23, and the first episode is scheduled to air April 19.

ABA expresses disappointment in passage of Ledbetter Act
The American Bakers Association (ABA) expressed deep disappointment that Congress passed and President Obama signed S. 181, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law. During this time of economic turmoil, bakers need relief from unwarranted litigation that could unduly strain their struggling businesses.
