Rancher's Daughter Launches New Career in Cattle Industry

It’s no secret that with escalating input costs in the beef cattle business, it is becoming increasingly challenging for the next generation to stay involved in production agriculture. More often than not, farm and ranch kids are leaving home in pursuit of higher paying jobs in large cities, and who could blame them? Agriculture is a tough career choice, one that requires round-the-clock attention and long days of hard labor. However, a growing number of young people, including myself, are finding a way to be involved in production agriculture while pursuing exciting careers that help supplement their cattle businesses. So, is it possible to have your cake and eat it, too? For my friend and peer in the business, Lacey Caffee, who grew up on her family’s cattle operation, having a career and staying involved in beef production is an option that she is successfully pursuing.

DJ CME Livestock Review: Cattle Complex Dips

Chicago Mercantile Exchange pit-traded live cattle and feeder futures prices Wednesday ended lower amid widespread long liquidation. After cattle futures pushed higher on Tuesday and filled a chart gap in the February contract, traders Wednesday got back to market fundamentals, which means looking at cash prices that were lower this week, brokers said.

Where's the Beef? (Hint: Look in the Dog Dish)

Slowly but surely, grass-fed beef from the Thousand Hills Cattle Co. is becoming a familiar sight in groceries, co-ops, some of the Twin Cities' top restaurants and even on school lunch trays. Its next destination may be your dog's food dish.
Todd Churchill's ranching enterprise, inspired by author Michael Pollan's account of a steer's path to market, is rolling out Restoration Raw, a blend of raw grass-fed beef, sprouted grains, trace minerals and vitamins. The product came about after Churchill hired Will Winter, a holistic veterinarian formerly of the Uptown Veterinarian, to be herd health consultant.
