Reduce Winter Feed Costs

I haven't consulted the “Drought Monitor” website at all this year – a reflection of the favorable growing conditions we've enjoyed! More than one rancher I've visited with this summer has assessed pasture conditions with a statement along the lines of, “I could've run twice as many cows in this pasture.”

Cattle Prices Seen Steady/Higher This Week

Although seasonal pressure tends to weigh on cattle prices after Labor Day, 2010 is showing substantial strength in the export market and cattle feeders have done an excellent job managing the fed supply. The increase in export business and the size of cattle currently available to be slaughtered may be enough to temper seasonal tendencies this year.

Extending the Grazing Season: It's Not Too Late

It's September and fall is fast approaching. The growing season is winding down, but from a forage-production standpoint, an active growing season still lies ahead. For much of the Noble Foundation's service area, the first hard freeze will occur about Nov. 24, which leaves a good 60 days of growing season for warm-season forages.
