I’ll never forget my first heifer, 510C. I was four
years old when I got my start in the cattle business. That year, my
grandpa had a bottle calf, and he asked me if I would take care of him
and get him big enough to join the rest of the calves. I took great
pride in feeding my bottle calf, although I’m sure I did plenty of
watching, and my dad did most of the feeding.

Just when cattle producers' long-awaited rally appeared to
falter, some hot temperatures in Kansas have put life into cattle and
meat prices. News that more than 2,000 cattle had died of heat stress
in Kansas a week ago, and that much of the Great Plains had heat
advisories pushed up cattle prices from $86/cwt. a month ago.

We think that Darci Adams "doth protest too much" when she
attempts to defend the Humane Society of the United States as an
organization concerned about animal care. The only thing she got right
in her recent editorial (July 7, "Humane Society responds to critics")
is when she admits that the HSUS is not your local Humane Society that
takes care of stray dogs and cats.
