Sun scales down video streaming
Sun Microsystems today announced an expansion of its Streaming System video portfolio that adds small to midscale streaming of television and IP-based video to create an IPTV system that can scale from 100 to 160,000 simultaneous streams. The goal is to give service providers building new video delivery networks cost-effective options for growing their business seamlessly at a pace that makes sense for them, said Sandeep Agrawal, group marketing manager of IP video delivery for Sun.

Widevine secures Microsoft's Silverlight platform
Content security provider Widevine today announced it would integrate its content protection platform with Microsoft Silverlight, the company’s crossbrowser, crossplatform media plug-in for the Web. The partnership marks the first time Microsoft has worked with a third-party digital rights management (DRM) content security company.

MobiTV enhances mobile content delivery
In conjunction with the NAB Show this week in Las Vegas, MobiTV has unveiled an enhanced version of its Optimized Delivery Server designed for the distribution of live, clip-linear, video on demand (VOD) and downloadable media over broadband and wireless networks. The updated content-delivery technology is intended to optimize network use and the user experience for mobile television.

In the spotlight: Peter MacAvock, executive director of the DVB
Mobile television is a topic attracting global attention, but not a lot of traction to speak of, yet. With two new standards for digital television, the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project aims to expedite the market for handheld digital TV. The global industry-led consortium will demo the new standards — the DVB-SH for mobile TV and DVB-T2 for advanced digital broadcast transmission — in next-generation terrestrial TV services at the NAB Show in Las Vegas this week. DVB executive director Peter MacAvock spoke with associate news editor Sarah Reedy about what’s holding back digital TV services and what will drive them forward.

Building B lifts a veil
A few weeks ahead of its long-anticipated formal unveiling, video wholesaler Building B let one interesting bit of information out yesterday. By formally unveiling Harris as provider of its network operations center, Building B indicated it would be using digital TV spectrum to deliver the largest part of its video offering to broadband operators including telcos and ISPs.

WRAL delivers four simultaneous broadcast HD video channels
Harmonic has announced that WRAL-TV in Raleigh, NC, the first commercially licensed HD TV broadcast station in the United States, deployed Harmonic's digital video solutions for a unique broadcast application. Using Harmonic's DiviCom MPEG-2 HD encoders, WRAL was able to provide real-time broadcast delivery of four simultaneous basketball games in the 1080i HD format to the regional cable operator during the recent NCAA National Collegiate Basketball Tournament. The simultaneous HD broadcast was made possible by leveraging the ultra-high compression efficiency of the MV 500 MPEG-2 encoder.

WFTV uses IP microwave link for backhaul
T-VIPS, a technology company that designs, builds and supplies solutions for contribution and distribution of broadcast-quality video signals over IP networks, announced April 11 that WFTV, the Orlando-based Cox-owned ABC affiliate, has deployed T-VIPS TVG420s to transport MPEG-2 news footage from its transmitter site over a microwave link to its studio. The TVG420 is part of T-VIPS’ Video Gateway suite, a line of compact and powerful and cost-effective products designed for real-time contribution and distribution of professional SD and HD video over IP networks.

OMVC promises live mobile TV by digital transition
Live mobile television in high-quality digital will be available to mobile handsets and other portable devices by the digital transition in February 2009, the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) promised more than 500 NAB Show attendees today. The association of more than 800 commercial and public television broadcasters hosted a panel discussion today to share advancements since last year’s NAB announcement that it would accelerate the development of mobile DTV.

TANDBERG launches next-gen content delivery system
At the NAB Show, multimedia company TANDBERG Television, a division of the Ericsson Group, is launching its next-generation MediaPath Secure Content Delivery System, which distributes content across any platform or device. The end-to-end technology allows content providers, network operators or affiliates to deliver nonlinear digital HD and SD TV programs, advertising, music and games — from point to multipoint. The solution is designed to allow telcos to collaborate on efficiently delivering more content in more formats.

Appear TV unveils redundancy software for IP headends
Norway-based Appear TV, a global provider of next-generation headends for broadcast and IP television, launched a software-based redundancy provisioning that automatically maximizes service levels in IP networks. Dubbed “always on,” the module is a seamless integration between broadcast equipment and IP networks, designed to increase reliability of service while decreasing the amount of operating resources.

Broadcast International brings video encoding to 3Mb/s
Broadcast International (BI) will demonstrate live HD video encoding at less than 3Mb/s. The company claims this is the first time in the broadcast industry that video will be encoded from a live camera feed at this rate of video compression. The company’s CodecSys video compression software is now integrated with IBM’s Media Hub framework for real-time encoding in a production broadcast workflow environment.
