Phil Erli was an early IPTV convert. The executive VP of
Georgia-based ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier) Ringgold Telephone
has been 'doing' IPTV for five years, deploying well ahead of AT&T and
other major global carriers. But as he told a NAB audience Monday,
real-life experience has made him somewhat cynical about IPTV’s

While all-IP networks may be attracting all the attention, OpenTV,
for one, is not ready to cede the market to pure-play providers. The
interactive television and advertising company is confident that hybrid
set-top boxes (STBs) are not going anywhere and that telcos are better
served not going it alone. Tracy Geist, senior VP of market development
for OpenTV, said that sticking with a hybrid STB gives telcos — both
new entrants to the IPTV market and the early pioneers — the best of

Telecom companies rolling out IPTV have to market it on a

service. In some cases, that means going door-to-door, and in others, it
can mean guerilla marketing, according to both telco execs and industry
analysts.

StreamScope Enterprise Monitor
(EM-40)
At the 2008 NAB Show, Triveni Digital will debut its new
StreamScope Enterprise Monitor (EM-40) enterprise-wide
service-quality assurance solution. The StreamScope EM-40 is aimed at
proactive, real-time, service-based response. It proactively detects,
localizes, analyzes, isolates, and remedies faults impacting video
services based on predefined rules. This allows broadcasters, service
providers, and IPTV networks to reduce customer down-time and complaint
response costs by providing the user with full remote analysis
capabilities for any monitored streams. Alarms are generated when a
transport stream has fallen outside a specified configuration.
Integrated trend analysis enables engineering staff to analyze past
issues. The StreamScope EM-40 ensures:
- Network integrity
- Video quality of service
- Viewer satisfaction
- Lower customer service costs, lower churn, higher revenues
